Tribute to Jan Amos Comenius – The Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart

A compound programme linking parts of the work with singing choir compositions will take place on October 13, 2020 in St. Anthony, the Great, church in Liberec

Students of the Pedagogical Faculty of the Technical University in Liberec get to know during their studies the personality of Jan Amos Comenius – the pedagogue. They decided to penetrate more deeply into the work and legacy of Comenius by creating a compound programme which links parts of Comenius’ work with compositions for a singing choir. That was neither an accidental nor a random decision. The students, in cooperation with teachers Jana Konvalinková from the Primary education department and Christopher Muffett from the English studies department, had already created two compound programmes recalling and reviving legacies of our country, both historical and human. Engaged in the programmes were primary school pupils and students - senior citizens from the University of the Third Age. This project overlapped the students’ usual activities by being three-generational.

Elaboration of parts of Comenius’ work The Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart for a compound programme in Czech and English follows up former activities of its creators. High enthusiasm, engagement of three generations and the desire to recall and truely live the legacy of the Czech Teacher of the nations are reflected in busy preparations, rehearsals and realization. Experiences of all age categories have shown that when significant and deeply human messages are passed along, the pervaded music deepens the words as well as one’s inward enjoyment. The programme will be premiered in Liberec on October 13, 2020 at 7 p.m.

„When I was at an age when human reason starts to understand the difference between the good and the evil…“ is the beginning of the compound programme. In it, together with Comenius and his wanderer, we will settle on an interesting journey through the labyrinth of life. We thank Comenius for showing us the way of the truth.
