LEARN TO BE WISE! THIS TIME IN COMENIUS PEDAGOGICAL LIBRARY…
On March 11 - June 30, 2020 Comenius Pedagogical Library presents in its building a follow-up of a successful exhibition “Learn to Be Wise! Orbis Pictus in the Course of Ages II.”
A joint exhibition of National Museum and Comenius National Pedagogical Museum and Library introduces to its visitors one of the most famous works of the “Teacher of Nations”, which was also remembered by Johann Wolfgang Goethe. The first edition of Orbis Pictus was published in Nurnberg by printer Michael Endter in 1658. It was a Latin-German version, while later on up to five-language mutations were published.
Over the 19th and 20th centuries Orbis Pictus was published in many modifications. In the 19th century Comenius’ textbook served as a source of inspiration for teachers who started to create large didactical pictures, to be seen here, too, as part of the exhibition. It concerns especially the works from the collection of Karel Slavoj Amerling from mid-19th century. Comenius Pedagogical Library completed the exhibition by providing samples of various editions of Orbis Pictus and other opuses inspired by it, from its book collections.
By 2016 Orbis Pictus was translated into 19 languages and published in 259 editions. New translations from the past several years prove that this work is still alive, and still has its readers.
The admission is free for readers and general public in the building of Comenius Pedagogical Library, Jeruzalémská 12, Praha 1 – Nové Město, at the opening hours Monday to Friday, 10.00 a.m. – 6.p.m., till the end of June.
